Stowe transports ailing Harang 300 miles to hospital

"Rick Stowe is the Reds' clubhouse manager, but Saturday night he played ambulance driver.

Stowe was the one who drove Aaron Harang back to Cincinnati, where Harang had an emergency appendectomy at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Harang was first hit by pain at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

"He called his wife, then the trainer," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "They took him in a 1 o'clock."

They caught it earlier enough that doctors thought it was safe for Harang to return to Cincinnati.

"They were prepared to stop in Columbus if something happened," Baker said. "They didn't want him to fly in case there was an emergency in the air. Fortunately, he was close enough to drive. He wanted to be back in Cincinnati, where his family is."

Harang's season is finished."
