With Joe Mauer on the disabled list, Drew Butera was the Twins' starting catcher for the third straight game Friday night, but manager Ron Gardenhire said he doesn't expect Butera to dominate the catching duties with Mauer on the shelf.

Instead, he intends to use a mix of Butera, with his well-documented catch-and-throw prowess, and Steve Holm, a 31-year-old, right-handed hitter with less of an arm but more of a bat than Butera.

The Twins signed Holm in December, and Gardenhire said he liked what he saw from the San Francisco Giants' 2001 17th-round draft pick during spring training. Holm went 6 for 15, with two doubles and a run batted in in Grapefruit League play. The effort that Holm, who started the season with Class AAA Rochester, made to learn the Twins' pitching staff impressed Gardenhire, and his results at the plate surprised the manager.
