" According to multiple baseball sources, the Rangers have had advanced talks with the Florida Marlins about trading minor league pitching for infielder Jorge Cantu, but the Rangers continue to survey the trade market.
General manager Jon Daniels declined to comment on specific trade possibilities, but said Sunday that he expected to have multiple conversations with teams about potential trade targets this week. The Rangers have maintained that they would like to add a right-handed hitter capable of playing first base in relief of Chris Davis.
One source said the Rangers and Marlins engaged in detailed conversations over the weekend about Cantu. According to the source, the clubs apparently left the conversation understanding each other's parameters, but the Rangers continue to feel out the market to try and get a real sense of what is available and what the cost would be.
Cantu is hitting .260 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs for Florida this year and can be a free agent after the year. He is capable of playing first, second or third base, though he's considered to be subpar defensively at second and third.
But there has also been some sentiment in the Rangers organization for Baltimore's Ty Wigginton , among others. According to at least one internet report, the Chicago Cubs are mulling the possibility of dealing Derek Lee.
The Rangers have also scouted Boston's Mike Lowell, for whom the team agreed to make a trade last winter before Lowell failed a physical. Lowell is currently on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket after a hip injury and might not be ready until after the July 31 deadline. He could still be traded, but would have to clear waivers at that point. That is not expected to be a problem.
Wigginton, 33, is considered a better defender at the various infield positions, but he has cooled off significantly after a hot start. Wigginton is hitting just .211 with three homers and 17 RBIs since June 1. He hit .288 with 13 homers and 32 RBIs in the first two months. "
