"Matt Leinart will come to Houston today to sign a one-year contract to be the third quarterback behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.
General manager Rick Smith and agent Tom Condon reached an agreement early this morning.
Leinart, placed on waivers by Arizona last week, will practice with his new teammates for the first time Wednesday when they continue preparations for Sunday’s opener against Indianapolis at Reliant Stadium.
Smith and coach Gary Kubiak elected to pursue Leinart rather than sign quarterback John David Booty to the practice squad. Until Leinart became available, the Texans intended to add Booty to the practice squad and go with two quarterbacks on the regular roster.
Booty followed Leinart, who won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship, as the starting quarterback at USC.
Only Condon knows for sure how many teams were interested in Leinart, and he’s not revealing it. There were Internet reports that Seattle, New Orleans, Oakland, Jacksonville and Cincinnati were interested."
