Eagles left guard Evan Mathis will miss the upcoming OTAs and possibly the rest of the summer minicamps after undergoing a minor surgical procedure on his ankle, two league sources said.

The sources said Mathis is expected to be 100 percent well before the start of training camp at the NovaCare Complex in late July or early August.

One source described the procedure as a “clean out” and said it wasn’t to repair any specific injury but just to address swelling and discomfort Mathis had been experiencing.

OTAs – organized team activities – are scheduled to begin on May 13, a week from Monday, and continue on and off through May 31. There is also a minicamp June 4-6.

Mathis did participate in the Eagles’ pre-draft full-team minicamp last month.

Mathis, a Pro Bowl alternate pick in 2011, has started 31 of 32 games since signing with the Eagles before the 2011 season. He signed a five-year, $25,502,945 contract extension on March 19, 2012.

With Mathis out, former first-round draft pick Danny Watkins would likely get reps with the first offensive line, and that could be an opportunity for the former Canadian firefighter, who turns 29 this fall.
