TCU defensive tackle Jon Lewis has decided to leave the team. He was to be a senior in 2014. TCU officials would not confirm the report, first reported by Matt Jennings of Rivals.com. But several sources at the school confirmed that Lewis has left the team but will remain enrolled.

Lewis started the last five games in 2013 and finished with 39 tackles, including 11 for losses and 4.5 sacks.

He played in all 13 games in 2012, including starts in the first four. He finished with just six tackles. As a true freshman in 2011, he played in all 13 games and had 16 tackles, including a sack. Lewis attended Klein Oak, north of Houston.

Lewis’ move is similar to linebacker Joel Hasley, who decided to leave the team before his final season last August.

Ex-UT coach to SJSU

Two days after interviewing for the vacant San Jose State defensive coordinator position, former Texas defensive coordinator Greg Robinson has been hired by the Spartans, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Robinson replaces Kenwick Thompson, who left SJSU to coach at Vanderbilt.

Robinson replaced Manny Diaz at Texas two games into last season after the Longhorns gave up a school-record 550 yards rushing against BYU. He was also the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator in 2004.

Before returning to Austin, Robinson was the defensive coordinator at Michigan for two seasons and was the Syracuse head coach for four seasons.

Robinson helped stabilize the Longhorns’ defense, but it wasn’t enough to save head coach Mack Brown’s job.

The Spartans ranked 104th nationally in both scoring defense and total defense last season.
