"Some losses hurt more than others, but the Royals will experience few that wound deeper than this one.

It wasn't just the ninth-inning collapse Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians; there was also the news that catcher Matt Treanor was undergoing tests at a local hospital after suffering a concussion earlier in the game on a play at the plate.

"That's a double-tough loss, but what's most important is Matty," said Brayan Peña, who made two costly misplays after replacing Treanor. "He went down, and it was devastating. And then to lose the game … it sucks that this happened."

Joakim Soria, 5-4, surrendered four runs in the ninth for his first blown save since May 30. Matt LaPorta capped the Cleveland comeback with a three-run, two-out homer that just cleared the left-field wall.

"I tried to make my best pitches, and they hit them," said Soria, who had allowed just one run in 22 innings over his previous 20 appearances. "You can't do anything to help it."

Treanor was injured on a play in the sixth inning when he preserved a 1-0 lead by blocking the plate on LaPorta after taking a throw from left fielder Alex Gordon. LaPorta came in hard, but clean, for a collision that sent Treanor spinning to the ground.

"He was knocked out at the plate," manager Ned Yost said, "and very dazed (as he left the field). He didn't know what planet he was on when he got up."

Treanor was diagnosed with a concussion and transported to a nearby hospital for a CT scan. The Royals placed him on the seven-day disabled list, which covers concussions, and will make a roster move today to add a catcher.

All signs point to Manny Piña, who is already on the 40-man roster, being recalled from Class AA Northwest Arkansas. Piña was removed Saturday from the Naturals' game at Springfield in the fifth inning."
