Sore elbow sidelines 2B Phillips

"Add another name to the Reds' list of walking wounded.

Second baseman Brandon Phillips said he will miss five games after taking a pitch off his left elbow in Tuesday night's game.

"X-rays were negative," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It was right on the tip of the elbow. It might be a couple of days."

Phillips posted on Twitter that he got two diagnoses: traumatic lateral epicondylitis and a contusion to the lateral extensor mechanism. In layman's terms, he has a bruised elbow.

Baker did not think Phillips was struck in retaliation for pointing in the dugout after hitting a home run the night before.

"I don't know what a purpose pitch is," Baker said. "I don't think it was a fastball. If you're going to hit a guy with a purpose and you're throwing 95 mph, you throw a fastball."

The umpire warned both dugouts.

"I was surprised," Baker said.

Phillips said he was pointing at Baker because he told him he was going to hit a home run or strike out.

The Reds went into Wednesday missing three-fourths of their regular starting infield, with third baseman Scott Rolen and shortstop Zack Cozart on the disabled list."
