Cardinals third baseman David Freese expects to miss several more days as he deals with continuing discomfort in his back related to his tumble into the stands on March 4.

Freese chased a popup toward the seats and fell when the gate separating the field from the seats gave way. He bruised his tailbone and returned to appear in four games since, but ongoing soreness meant not taking grounders or swinging a bat Saturday. His activity was limited to playing catch, as it could be into this week.

“It’s just banged up a little bit,” Freese said. “We’re just going to hang out for a couple days and let it get back to normal. There is nothing serious.”

The infielder and the club’s medical staff are discussing treatments to attack what Freese called inflammation in the area. He said the pain comes with movement. Manager Mike Matheny described Freese’s ailment as pain “not conducive to doing your job on a baseball field.”
