"By the time Jon Lester figured things out, it was too late.
The Milwaukee Brewers were aggressive from the outset against Lester last night, smashing three solo home runs in the first three innings. The Brewers posted four runs in the first three innings, before Lester settled down and finished with five scoreless frames. The damage was done, however, and the Brewers won, 4-2, at Fenway Park.
"Sometimes it's tough throwing against teams you don't really know, especially early on," Lester said after his first career start against Milwaukee. "You're trying to feel them out, figure out what their game plan is against you — and, obviously, they were very aggressive. We made the adjustment later and started to get some outs."
Rickie Weeks led off the game and should have been retired, but Adrian Gonzalez committed his first error of the season by dropping a foul pop-up. Weeks took advantage of the second life, smashing the next pitch into the first row of the Monster seats in left-center.
Weeks was barely back in the dugout before Corey Hart took Lester's next pitch over the Sox bullpen in right-center.
"The ball that Weeks hit out, the ball came back a little bit," Lester said. "We know that's his strength, obviously, out over the plate, but we figured with ramming two balls in there the first two pitches, going away, we'd have a chance to get a roll-over or something like that. Obviously, that wasn't the case. If Hart is going to hit a ball to right-center like that, a right-handed hitter here in this park, you tip your hat. I thought it was a pretty good pitch down and away. He stayed on it and hit it a long way."
Former Sox backup catcher George Kottaras led off the third inning by blasting a homer over the Sox bullpen. The three home runs allowed tied a career high Lester set on Opening Day."
