Sixers still need to make a deal for big scorer

"The 76ers didn't make a big splash at the NBA draft on Thursday. They still have Andre Iguodala. And coach Doug Collins was saying that the Sixers might have the perimeter scorers they need in 21-year-old Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner, who is entering his second season.

Somewhere, you can hear a collective groan from the fan base that desperately wants a 20-point per game scorer like Golden State's Monta Ellis.

Such a scorer, Sixers president Rod Thorn has said without mentioning names, could help take the Sixers from a .500 team to a 50-win team that makes it deep into the playoffs.

"That's the next step," Thorn said. "That really separates the really good teams from the teams that are good. That's what we want to do."

So the question becomes, if the Sixers go into next season with the same roster (read: Iguodala taking those crucial shots late in close games), can they reach that 50-win goal?

Sixers GM Ed Stefanski thinks so.

"I know the fan base is excited after last year because they see the improvement," he said. "They see the young kids we have here. Jrue Holiday is going to be better. Jodie Meeks is going to be better. Thad [Young] is going to be better. This kid [Nikola Vucevic], we're excited about. We think we have one of the best coaches. He's excited about the team going forward."

Then Stefanski added: "But we need to do more, and that's what we're working real hard to get -- more pieces to this."

Like what?

It's not like the Sixers can replicate what the Flyers did last Thursday. In one fell swoop, they shook up their roster by trading captain Mike Richards and Jeff Carter essentially to sign free agent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, as well as getting high draft picks and salary cap room."
