Six Pirates — Pedro Alvarez, Vin Mazzaro, Mark Melancon, Gaby Sanchez, Travis Snider and Neil Walker — were among the 146 major league players who filed for salary arbitration Tuesday.

Walker and Sanchez are in their second year of eligibility. The others are going through the process for the first time.

The filings were a formality, meaning none of the players — who are not yet eligible for free agency — have come to terms on a contract for 2014.

The next step in the process comes Friday when players' agents and teams swap salary figures. Negotiations can continue until an arbitration board announces a decision by choosing either the player or the team's number. Salary arbitration hearings will be in February.
