"It appears the closest Brandon Webb will get to pitching in Arlington this year was a May 30 rehab start in Frisco.
The right-hander got the results of his MRI Wednesday and it looks like his season with Texas has ended before it began.
The test on the right shoulder showed changes to Webb's rotator cuff. The Rangers do not expect Webb to be able to pitch again this season.
"It's disappointing from the standpoint that when we signed him we knew this was a risk-reward type deal," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "We knew that he had some shoulder history, but thought he was at a point where he could kind of push through it and get over the hump. Unfortunately, really through no lack of effort or work or anything like that, it's just not working out."
The next step for Webb, who wasn't at Rangers Ballpark Wednesday, is to decide what to do about the shoulder. One of the options would be to have surgery on it again.
Webb, 32, had a debridement surgery procedure performed on the shoulder in August 2009 by Rangers team doctor Keith Meister. A familiarity with Meister was one of the reasons Webb signed with the Rangers in the off-season.
Texas gave Webb a one-year, $3 million contract that could have paid him up to $8 million with incentives.
He didn't reach any of those, as he failed to appear in a game in spring training while building up arm strength. He opened the season on the disabled list and didn't get into a game until the start for Double A Frisco. That game marked his first regular-season professional start since April 6, 2009."
