"The Panthers have found their tight end.
Jeremy Shockey, who had drawn interest from Carolina and the Miami Dolphins, announced on his Twitter feed Thursday he was headed to Charlotte. Shockey has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Panthers, according to a league source.
"Looks like I'm signing with Carolina. Time for the next chapter," Shockey wrote. "This is a great opportunity for me, and I am excited to play football. Let's hope we all have the chance to play this season."
Shockey, who made four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons with the Giants, will be reunited with his position coach at the University of Miami – Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
At his introductory press conference in January, new Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he wanted to employ one tight end rather than the committee approach used by John Fox last season. Rivera and Chudzinski worked for Norv Turner in San Diego, where the Chargers' passing offense featured a heavy dose of tight end Antonio Gates.
Shockey, 30, has struggled with injuries in recent years. He missed 10 games due to injury in three seasons with New Orleans, which released him last month."
