Stars forward Shawn Horcoff was honored with a standing ovation Wednesday in his return to the place where he played for 13 years, the last three as captain.

Horcoff, who played 796 games for the Oilers, was traded to the Stars in the summer for Philip Larsen, and said the return home was one of the most nervous moments in his career.

“I’ve made some great friends here and the organization, in a lot of ways, is like a family to me,” he said. “It’s all I really know.”

Edmonton players spent the morning praising their former captain.

“There’s one thing you can control as a player — your work ethic — and he did that,” said longtime teammate Ryan Smyth. “He earned everything he got in the game today. He was a good leader, he was vocal in the locker room, and he led by example.”
