"All quarterback Shaun Hill could think about immediately after his 34-completion, 331-yard passing day Sunday was how badly he wants his teammates to taste a victory.
"I feel like the guys fought so hard," said Hill, after the Lions' 28-26 loss to Green Bay. "We deserved that win. We deserve to get the feeling of a win in this locker room. I just feel terrible we haven't got that."
Hill, making his third start for injured starter Matthew Stafford, executed a smartly-devised game plan that rolled up 431 yards against a superb Packers defense.
"You have to give Shaun Hill credit," said Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "And their offensive coordinator (Scott Linehan). They had a solid game plan for our defense and I thought Shaun was very good in his reads. They moved it up and down the field on us."
The Packers were keenly aware of rookie running back Jahvid Best, particularly on screens and short passes.
They were taking that away and playing man-to-man coverage on receivers Calvin Johnson and Bryant Johnson.
Hill took advantage of that early. Johnson had six catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns, both were thrown right into the teeth of two defenders.
"They were in man coverage," coach Jim Schwartz said. "They doubled him on that, but when you double in man coverage they aren't looking and that gave Calvin a chance to go up and get it."
When the Packers adjusted their coverage, Hill picked them apart underneath. Tight ends Brandon Pettigrew (eight catches, 91 yards) and Tony Scheffler (six for 63) combined for 14 catches and 154 yards.
On one play, the Packers defenders were so intent on chasing receivers downfield, Hill took off and ran untouched for 40 yards, setting up a field goal."
