"Make no mistake about it - Shaun Hill wants to play and he wants to start.

After not playing in his first five years in the league, Hill has won 10 games in 16 starts over the last three years for the San Francisco 49ers. When he was traded to the Detroit Lions, though, he knew he had no chance to compete with Matthew Stafford for the starting job.

"I'm very competitive and everybody wants to play, but I don't have an ego. I'm a team guy, team first,'' Hill said. "What's best for this team is for Matthew to go out and have a successful season and for me to step in if need be. That's what's best for the team and that's what I'm going to do. I've always been a team guy. Even when things went down in San Francisco the way they did, I still showed up to work and did my film study with Alex (Smith) and helped him as much as I could. I don't have that type of ego, I can put that on the backburner and accept my role.''"
