"It has been that kind of a year for the Detroit Lions: As soon as they get their quarterback situation straightened out, another key position becomes unsettled.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday that Shaun Hill will be the team's starting quarterback Sunday when they close out the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field.
Unfortunately for Hill, he might not have his most dangerous weapon: receiver Calvin Johnson.
Johnson suffered an ankle injury in the second half of Detroit's 34-27 win against the Miami Dolphins last week and didn't practice Wednesday. It's possible he won't practice all week but still could play Sunday.
Whether he practices, he likely will be a game-time decision.
"We'll see. He's in a situation where he doesn't need to practice to be able to play, but hopefully we can get him on the practice field and get him going," Schwartz said. "If he's ready on Sunday, he'll play."
If Johnson can't play, the Lions will have to rely on Nate Burleson and tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler because they haven't been getting much help out of their backup receivers.
Hill said the possible loss of Johnson would change Detroit's game plan.
"He's obviously a big weapon for us and he's a guy we try to get the ball to as often as possible," Hill said. "He creates mismatches for us, and not only that, but he always takes an extra defender with him wherever he goes and that opens up other people. If we have to go into this without him, it'll be more difficult for sure. But hopefully he'll be ready."
While Hill said he didn't suffer any setbacks during the Miami game with his broken right finger, there also is good news on the injury front concerning Jahvid Best.
The rookie running back, who has been fighting turf toe issues most of the season, showed some flash last week with a 53-yard touchdown reception."
