"On the eve of Friday's opening to the NHL free-agency period, the Sharks took steps toward stocking their back two lines.
Energetic left wing Jamie McGinn has been re-signed to a one-year contract for a reported $680,000. McGinn, who turns 23 in August, had a goal and five assists in 49 games last season. He figures to man a winger position on either the third or fourth lines.
Frazer McLaren, another winger who has played 32 games with the Sharks, also was re-signed to a one-year deal.
Both forwards were restricted free agents.
The Sharks had high hopes for McGinn, the 36th overall pick of the 2006 draft, last season. But he struggled mightily and didn't score his only goal until Jan. 15. He spent the second half of the season in Worcester of the American Hockey League.
But he was recalled in early April and made a mark with his hard-nosed play in the postseason.
San Jose, in part because of limited salary-cap space, doesn't figure to make a big splash in free agency. The Sharks already made a bold move last week with their draft-night trade for Minnesota Wild All-Star defenseman Brent Burns - giving up Devin Setoguchi, top prospect Charlie Coyle and their No. 1 draft selection.
Several of the team's unrestricted free agents are due to hit the open market: Defensemen Ian White and Kent Huskins as well as forwards Kyle Wellwood and Ben Eager."
