"Anyone who thought the Sharks were finished rebuilding their defensive corps learned otherwise Wednesday.
San Jose general manager Doug Wilson signed Colin White to a one-year, $1 million contract less than 24 hours after the 33-year-old defenseman became an unrestricted free agent when the New Jersey Devils bought out the final year of his contract to open space under the salary cap.
White becomes the third veteran added to the Sharks' blue line this offseason, following the blockbuster deal for Brent Burns and the acquisition of James Vandermeer. But Wilson dismissed the notion that his blue line may be getting too crowded.
"A stopper, a physical guy who's also an excellent penalty killer -- you can never have too many of those," Wilson said, referring to White, who won two Stanley Cups during his decade with the Devils.
The Sharks appear to have gotten the 6-foot-4, 215-pound White at a bargain price. He was scheduled to earn $3 million with New Jersey this season, and the Devils must pay him two-thirds of that over the next two years under terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
Whatever disappointment the Nova Scotia native felt when his 11 seasons with the Devils ended eased when the Sharks showed interest."
