"As the Giants celebrated their division title by beating San Diego on the final Sunday, Miguel Tejada sat in the visiting dugout and figured he had just lost his last chance to win a ring after 14 seasons of futility.
Once he agreed to his one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Giants, Tejada said, he told his wife, "This is the year you're not going to see me in the house in October. I'm going to be in San Francisco."
Tejada was beaming in a three-piece suit Thursday after he passed his physical and was presented as the new Giants shortstop. General manager Brian Sabean was buoyant as well after replacing Juan Uribe with a player he tried to acquire last summer from Baltimore, before the Orioles traded him to the Padres.
"We're relieved we have plugged this hole with such an experienced player and somebody who really wanted to be a Giant, so we're really thankful," Sabean said.
Tejada's signing comes on a busy week for the champs. Today, they will announce Pat Burrell's return with an exceedingly team-friendly one-year, $1 million contract that includes no incentives. Though he will be paid like a reserve, Burrell will get a shot to be the everyday left fielder, Sabean said.
On Thursday night, the Giants re-signed reserve infielder Mike Fontenot to a one-year deal, worth just over $1 million, 10 minutes before the deadline to tender 2011 contracts to all unsigned players. Sabean said Fontenot will get a lot of work at short next spring so he can back up Tejada.
The Giants "non-tendered" reliever Chris Ray and, in a surprise, utilityman Eugenio Velez, who both become free agents. The Giants might try to re-sign them to minor-league deals."
