The Giants have optioned outfielder Francisco Peguero to Triple-A Fresno and recalled first baseman Brett Pill, who has wielded a hot bat down there.

Peguero also hit well in Fresno but was 3-for-16 with spotty defense during his brief stay in San Francisco.

Pill, 28, is hitting .341 with a 1.054 OPS for the Grizzlies. He has played in Fresno for parts or all of the past four seasons. He has hit .239 with some pop in 167 big-league plate appearances and could start a game or two at first base against left-handed pitchers.

I don’t view him as an outfielder, though manager Bruce Bochy has used him there. The Giants get to use a designated hitter in the two games at Toronto and two more next week in Oakland. That could be a spot for him, too.

These moves are not a surprise in light of Peguero’s struggles and Angel Pagan showing that his right leg is healthy enough to allow one fewer outfielder on the roster.
