Setback for Lidge, Rollins improves

"Phillies reliever Brad Lidge, who's been throwing in extended spring training in Florida since experiencing right shoulder soreness in March, was on his way back to Philadelphia Monday after experiencing elbow soreness, General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said before Monday's Phillies-Dodgers game at Citizens Bank Park.

Lidge was diagnosed with a posterior rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder in March, and Amaro said Lidge's shoulder is now actually fine, but he's now having issues with his elbow.

"He had a setback," manager Charlie Manuel said Monday. "According to the doctors, that's kind of common, that soreness there that will hold you back."

Amaro said Lidge will be examined by Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti, most likely on Tuesday morning, to determine whether the soreness is serious.

Lidge was expected to begin a rehab stint soon with the Clearwater Threshers in the Class A Florida State League, but that's now on hold.

"It will be a while before he throws in a game," Manuel said.

Amaro said the good news is that Lidge's shoulder is fine.

"The shoulder's doing pretty well and getting stronger, but he gets this elbow discomfort pretty much every spring, and that's kind of what he's in right now, spring training mode, and we're going to see if it's anything more than just normal soreness," Amaro said.

Lidge, 34, has 104 saves in three seasons with the Phillies, including a perfect 48-for-48 during the Phils' 2008 World Series run."
