Lions coach Jim Schwartz ended the suspense after practice Monday, announcing that rookie Matthew Stafford, the team's No. 1 overall draft pick, will start at quarterback in the season opener Sunday at New Orleans. Stafford and veteran Daunte Culpepper were locked in a battle for the No. 1 job throughout the offseason and training camp.
"I was very pleased with what (Stafford) did in the preseason, going back to rookie minicamp and straight through," Schwartz said. "I think he's proven every step along the way that he's ready."
Schwartz was asked Monday if he was committed to weathering the bumpy road with a rookie starting quarterback this season, "
