Santa Clara freshman guard Jared Brownridge and USF coach Rex Walters earned awards Monday as the West Coast Conference announced its postseason basketball honors.

Brownridge, who averaged 18.4 points during WCC games and three times scored at least 30 points in a conference outing, was voted Newcomer of the Year by the WCC coaches.

"I am shocked. Just shocked and blessed," said Brownridge, a native of Aurora, Ill. "For this to happen my freshman year is a great moment for me. I didn't expect this coming to college."

Walters earned Coach of the Year after leading the Dons to 20 regular-season victories and a third-place WCC finish with 13 victories, the school's highest league win total since 1976-77.

BYU's Tyler Haws, who averaged 23.5 points in WCC games, was voted Player of the Year and Pepperdine's Brendan Lane was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Stephen Holt and Brad Waldow of Saint Mary's and Cole Dickerson of USF were named to the All-WCC first team.
