Sabres sign 2009 pick Marcus Foligno to three-year contract

"There is still no word on whether Marcus Foligno, the newest Buffalo Sabre, will start his minor-league career in Rochester or Portland. But once he gets to the NHL, he'll have access to one of the top dressing room facilities in the league.

The Sabres unveiled extensive HSBC Arena renovation plans Wednesday, shortly after signing Foligno to a three-year contract potentially worth $2.48 million. The son of former Buffalo captain Mike Foligno will start next season in the American Hockey League, but the Sabres refused to divulge where their affiliate will be based.

The Sabres have a contract to continue in Portland, Maine, for a fourth season, but sources say they are in negotiations to buy the Rochester Americans and return to their longtime minor-league home.

"We are evaluating what is the best form and location for an affiliate," Sabres President Ted Black said. "I really don't have any comment on it beyond we're considering everything, including what is the best model for an affiliate relationship. ... Whether that happens this year, next year or never, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't consider everything like that."

Black made it clear he thinks highly of Portland, but he also is a big fan of Rochester and having an NHL team run its minor-league club. The former Pittsburgh executive experienced the benefits when the Penguins managed their affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

"I know there's benefits of that model," said Black, who is aware of the bond created between the Sabres and Amerks during their 29-year relationship. "I consider Rochester to be part of the Sabres Nation. What I would say to anyone in Rochester is when we win the Stanley Cup, I can promise you we'll have a parade in Rochester, too."

Foligno is another prospect the Sabres hope will help them reach that goal. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound forward has blossomed since his selection in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL draft. The 19-year-old's skating and skills have dramatically improved, with tangible evidence coming when Canada selected him for its world junior team."
