The Sabres went through their third day of training camp Sunday with one notable exception: Marco Scandella. The defenseman, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip in May, took a maintenance day.

"He really went after it yesterday, just testing it out," coach Phil Housley said in HarborCenter. "He's a little sore, so it's no sense in rushing him back to play."

The Sabres' opening practices have been high-tempo, skate-heavy affairs. For the last two days, each group has skated for 45 minutes on one rink and immediately started another 45-minute session on the other rink.

While Scandella is expected to be recovered by the season opener Oct. 5, Housley saw no reason to push the defenseman early.
