Mark Teixeira is out of the World Baseball Classic. If Team USA is interested in adding Ryan Howard, the Phillies’ first baseman would listen.

“Definitely,” Howard said at Phillies camp Wednesday morning. “It’s always a great honor to represent your country. I’d love to do it, but I don’t know how it works and I haven’t heard anything.”

Howard is having a big spring. He is hitting .370 (10 for 27) with three doubles, three homers and 10 RBIs in 10 games.

Teixeira, the New York Yankees’ first baseman, pulled out of the tournament because of a wrist injury. Team USA is actively looking for a replacement and is said to be considering Howard, Paul Konerko and Ike Davis.

While Phillies officials are supporters of the WBC, they may have some reservations about Howard’s playing in the event. Last year, Howard missed all of spring training and half of the regular season recovering from a torn Achilles tendon.
