Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over starting job in Buffalo

"Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey did not wait long in making a big change to his woebegone offense.

Following an 0-2 start that's featured two clunkers by the offense, Gailey announced Monday that quarterback Trent Edwards has been sent to the bench, with Ryan Fitzpatrick to take over the starting job.

"We're going to make a change at quarterback," Gailey said. "We're looking for a spark. We're looking for something that gives us a new look, a new thought process, some new play on the field. We're looking for the right combination. We haven't found that yet."

Gailey indicated Fitzpatrick will be the starter moving forward, which could spell the end of Edwards' tenure in Buffalo. The former third-round pick out of Stanford is in the final year of a contract that pays him $1.65 million this season.

The timing of the switch at quarterback is perhaps a surprise because it comes so early in the season, but was dictated by the performances on the field. The Bills rank dead last in the NFL at 176 yards per game. The team's scoring average of 8.5 is also 32nd out of 32 teams.

Edwards, who was coming off the best preseason of his career, has not been able to continue that success. Through two games he's completed 29-of-55 passes (55.1 percent) for 241 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a quarterback rating of 58.3. The Bills' passing average of 89 yards per game is also last in the league.

The protection up front hasn't been much better, as Edwards has been sacked seven times, tied for third-most in the league.

Gailey cautioned that the move was not made solely because of Edwards' performance.

"The implication might be that it's all Trent's fault and that's not the case. We've got a lot of things we've got to work on," the coach said.

Fitzpatrick, who is making $2.36 million this year on a contract that runs through 2011, has been in this position before. He replaced Edwards in the starting lineup last season following a Week 10 loss to Tennessee, a game that marked the end of Dick Jauron's time as head coach."
