Ryan center of attention at Ducks' camp

"Change was in the air at Anaheim Ice on Saturday as an overflow crowd of hockey fans gathered to bid goodbye to a long summer and watch the Ducks open their training camp in a period of transition.

There were old faces such as Teemu Selanne and Todd Marchant, recognizable faces such as Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry and new faces such as Andy Sutton and Paul Mara. And there were fresh faces Cam Fowler and Emerson Etem.

But the biggest thing to come out of Day One of camp was Coach Randy Carlyle's proclamation that he's going to use reigning top goal scorer Bobby Ryan in the middle and form three scoring lines.

Ryan has lined up on either wing exclusively dating back to junior hockey.

"I think the way we're going to go forward is we're going to put Bobby Ryan at center to start and he has to fail at that position," Carlyle said. "We think it's a position that suits him and makes him more effective."

It is an intriguing prospect. Ryan can play a power forward's game but he also has the stick-handling skills to be a playmaker and potentially give the Ducks some serious depth down the middle with Getzlaf and Saku Koivu."
