Russell Martin slugs two home runs, bullpen rescues Ivan Nova as Yankees beat Boston Red Sox, 9-4

"Russell Martin's decision between the Yankees and Red Sox this winter came down to one simple factor: the Yankees wanted him more.

Following the Bombers' 9-4 win at Fenway Park Saturday, the Red Sox might be rethinking that decision. Martin belted two of the Yankees' four home runs, pacing an offense that scored in five of the first seven innings.

"They were interested, but at the same time, they were worried about the injuries that I had," Martin said of the Sox. "That's really what it came down to. The Yankees were much more aggressive and that was the end of the story."

Martin's second career two-homer day helped rescue Ivan Nova, who failed to make it out of the fifth inning. Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson also went deep, helping hand the Red Sox their seventh loss in eight games this season.

Eric Chavez, making his first start of the season, contributed three of the Yankees' season-high 13 hits while scoring one run and driving in another.

Martin's three-run blast over the Green Monster in the fourth helped chase Clay Buchholz (0-2) from the game, and handed Nova a 5-1 lead.

Nova's line may have looked different if not for a botched double play chance in the fourth by Cano, who lost his grasp on the ball before he could complete the twin killing on Jacoby Ellsbury. The Red Sox went on to score three runs in the inning against Nova, who was charged with four runs on seven hits in 41/3 innings, although the Yankees answered in the fifth with Granderson's two-run homer, his second of the year, to make it 7-4.

"I just didn't think he had command of his fastball today," Joe Girardi said of Nova. "I thought it hurt him."

Cano tacked on a solo homer in the sixth, then Martin drilled his second longball of the day over the Monster, pushing the lead to 9-4."
