Russell Martin sits out with bad back

"The Yankees' primary injury concern was on the mound yesterday, but they also have some trouble behind the plate.

Russell Martin did not play last night because of a balky back. This came at the same time the Yankees were dealing with Joba Chamberlain's forearm injury, which sent him to the 15-day disabled list.

Martin injured the back after Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox during a postgame workout. Martin was doing dead lifts when he felt something in his back after the first repetition.

"I just felt some discomfort so I stopped it," Martin said. "From then on, it hasn't been feeling right."

Girardi turned to Francisco Cervelli to start last night, and he had a good night with the bat, but a bad night in the field. Cervelli went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk, but made two throwing errors trying to throw out base stealers.

It is unclear how long Martin might be out for.

Martin did not sound optimistic after the Yankees' 11-6 loss to the Red Sox last night at the Stadium. He said that even after receiving a full day of treatment, the back felt the same, and he felt he might need to have it examined if it does not feel any better today.

Girardi said he would have turned to Martin as his emergency catcher last night. Jorge Posada was not at Yankee Stadium to be with his son, Jorge Jr., who underwent surgery yesterday.

Cervelli's appearance was the first time someone other than Martin has caught Burnett this year. The results were not good, but it's hard to pin that on Cervelli."
