Rudy Gay's buzzer-beater for Memphis Grizzlies beats Miami Heat, 97-95

"On a day filled with discipline and drama, the Grizzlies avoided being deflated by yet another defeat.

Rudy Gay made sure of that.

The blossoming forward cured the Grizzlies' state of depression and ended a five-game losing streak when his 13-foot shot at the buzzer gave them a 97-95 victory over the Miami Heat on Saturday night before an announced sellout crowd of 18,119 in FedExForum.

Gay dribbled toward the baseline near Miami's bench, pulled up and got the shot to touch nothing but net over the reach of LeBron James.

"We need each other to win," Gay said. "We distributed the ball, played together and got the win against a good team."

With Dwyane Wade out with a sore left wrist, James led the Heat with 29 points. Gay, though, had the last word after his turnover moments earlier had led to James tying the score at 95 off a fast-break dunk.

"I stayed on (Gay's) hip the whole time," James said. "I used my length to contest his shot. Give him credit. He made a big shot."

Memphis' final possession began with 5.5 seconds left, and afterward the Griz spoke of hope that Gay's basket would mean the start of something good.

Griz coach Lionel Hollins called the win significant not because it came against the Heat. He lauded the team's focus and unity, characteristics the Griz lacked when losing close games during the skid.

O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph were late for the team's shootaround earlier in the day. So Hollins didn't start them. He started rookie Xavier Henry and Darrell Arthur instead.

Randolph didn't pout. In fact, he seemed particularly hungry when he entered in the second half. Randolph led the Griz with 21 points and 13 rebounds. He gobbled up five of his six offensive boards in the fourth period."
