"The Royals opted to risk arbitration with seven of eight eligible players Monday by tendering formal contract offers to all unsigned players except left-handed reliever Aaron Laffey before the 11 p.m. deadline.
That decision means catcher Brayan Pena, infielder Chris Getz, outfielders Alex Gordon and Mitch Maier, and pitchers Luke Hochevar, Felipe Paulino and Jonathan Sanchez have the option of arbitration if they fail to reach a negotiated agreement.
The Royals acquired Laffey, 26, in an Oct. 11 waiver claim from the New York Yankees. He was eligible for arbitration for the first time after making $431,600 while going a combined 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA in 47 games for Seattle and New York.
The two sides talked but could not reach an agreement."
