"Not only did the Royals offer arbitration to left-handed pitcher Bruce Chen prior to tonight's deadline, they also appear to be making progress in reaching agreement on a new contract.

"I know he wants to be here, and we want him here," general manager Dayton Moore said. "The feeling is mutual. We'd like to get something done before the Winter Meetings (next month in Dallas). I think we're getting closer."

Chen, 34, is believed to be seeking a two-year deal in excess of $10 million after going 12-8 with a 3.77 ERA last season in 25 starts. He is a combined 24-15 with a 3.96 ERA over the last two seasons."
