"The Royals placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list Thursday afternoon with a tear in his right hip labral cartilage.

Gordon is scheduled for surgery on Friday with Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo. Philippon is the doctor who performed surgery on Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez's injured hip.

Gordon suffered the injury on Saturday while sliding into second base, and aggravated it later in the game while leaving the batter's box after hitting a double-play grounder.

Gordon is batting just two for 22 with one home run so far this season. There is no timetable on Gordon's return until after the surgery."
