Wayne Rooney will look to move abroad if he cannot engineer a move to Chelsea this summer.

The Manchester United striker is expected to submit a formal transfer request this week in a bid to facilitate a £30m transfer to Stamford Bridge.

United who are believed to be lining up a bid for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini continue to dig their heels in over the Rooney matter and are maintaining their public and private stance that they simply will not sell the England star to one of their prime Barclays Premier League rivals.

Rooney and indeed Chelsea continue to believe that United and their new manager David Moyes will cave in as the 27-year-old continues to emphasise just how much he wants out of the club that has been his home for the last nine years.

If they don’t though Rooney has decided that he would rather move to an attractive club on the continent rather than continue at Old Trafford.

It is understood that Rooney is not so desperate to leave that he will simply go anywhere but he would happily move his wife Colleen and two young children to the continent if a good offer meant he could escape what he now sees a pretty intolerable situation at Old Trafford.

Missing from the United squad that played their latest pre-season game against AIK Stockholm in Sweden Rooney is expected to have shaken off the shoulder injury he picked up during a training match at the weekend by the time Moyes takes his players to Wembley for the Community Shield game against Wigan on Sunday.

Asked if he would play in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial in front of a hostile Old Trafford crowd on Friday night Moyes said: 'There is nothing else I can tell you about Wayne except he has got a shoulder injury.

'It is not a serious one and it won’t keep him out for a long time.

'The problem we’ve got is that he has not played any games he’s not had any football so we need to take that into consideration.

'We’re trying to get Wayne into a condition where he is ready to play. I’ve got to say he came back in good condition trained well but he’s picked up a couple of injuries.

'He’s not going to be fit for Friday so I don’t think he’s going to fit and available.

'I hope he will be and there is a chance he will be but I have a feeling he won’ t make it.'
