Roma decided against signing Daley Blind from Manchester United primarily due to ‘financial reasons’, sporting director Monchi has said.

Blind, 27, was said to be in talks with the Serie A club on deadline day as they searched for a replacement for Emerson Palmieri, who joined Chelsea for £25million the previous day.

But Roma concluded that Blind, who has spent four years at Old Trafford – playing over 100 games for the Red Devils – was not a suitable target.

Roma subsequently signed Argentina international Jonathan Silva on a six-month loan contract from Sporting Lisbon. Speaking at Silva’s unveiling, Monchi said: ‘We started to hear something about Emerson before the transfer window opened.
