"Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., was in a bind.

He so desperately wanted to turn over the Phillies' lineup, to get younger and change the approach.

Amaro made that clear right after the Phillies' season ended with a whimper in the NLDS with their 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5.

"At some point, we're going to have to get younger with our position players," he said a few days after the season ended. "It's a young game, and it's played by young players."

But Amaro couldn't do it.

He had no choice but to bring back shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who signed a three-year, $33 million contract with a vesting option for a fourth year Saturday."
