For Todd Helton 40 is apparently the new 20-something.

The veteran first baseman who turned the big four-oh Aug. 20 hit his 13th home run Friday night in the ninth inning giving the Rockies a brief 3-2 lead over the Padres. Helton has clubbed five homers since Aug. 26 making him one of just four players to belt five home runs during that span.

Asked what's brought on the recent power surge Helton said: "I don't know. It's just that I'm swinging hard hoping for a sound and every once in a while I'm hearing it."

Even though it's late in the 17th season of his career Helton said he's feeling fit.

"I feel great. It's unbelievable" he said. "I feel like a 12-year-old schoolboy."

Before singling Saturday each of Helton's last six hits had gone for extra bases — one double five home runs.
