"Carlos Gonzalez looked around the clubhouse Monday and couldn't help wondering how many teammates might be gone by the July 31 trading deadline. It's a symptom of a disappointing season.
"We all get along together great, but we always knew that if we want to stay here, we have to be winners. We can't be average or be losing," Gonzalez said. "We have put ourselves in a bad situation. You can see guys possibly leaving, and that's not something we want."
While Ubaldo Jimenez has understandably received the most attention, the Rockies have received calls on several players, including Ty Wigginton and Ryan Spilborghs. General manager Dan O'Dowd has leverage because he doesn't have to do anything. Ownership is comfortable with the payroll and is not directing salary dumps. But the Rockies can't be viewed as threats while needing a telescope to see the division-leading Giants.
So look for the Red Sox to kick the tires on Wigginton and Spilborghs and the Yankees, Tigers and Rangers to continue following Jimenez's starts. No teammate wants to see Jimenez go, citing his immense talent and success at Coors Field. The Rockies have said they would listen when teams call about Jimenez but would have to be overwhelmed."
