With Eduardo Nunez not available after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist Friday night, it left the Yankees with a lack of depth at shortstop on Saturday. Jayson Nix started the game, but at its end Robinson Cano was manning the position.

Cano made his first major league debut at the position after Brennan Boesch pinch hit for Nix in the eighth inning. Cano moved over in the ninth, with Francisco Cervelli, who had started at catcher, taking over at second base.

"Weird," Cano said in describing his first attempt at playing shortstop since a one-game move there at Double-A Trenton in 2003.

He did not have to field any ground balls. Nunez, meanwhile, will likely be available again on Tuesday.
