"It was 51 degrees and dropping when the first pitch was thrown Saturday.
Fortunately for the Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now!, their bats didn't get cool until the second inning, while Ricky Nolasco kept the Phillies bats in a deep freeze all night long.
The Marlins got some measure of revenge against Phillies' starter Jamie Moyer, who came into the game 13-4 all-time against them, scoring five runs on four hits in the opening frame.
Nolasco then walked to the mound and took advantage of that 5-0 lead as he shut down one of the best lineups in baseball.
The result was a 5-1 win for the Marlins and the first complete game of the season for the pitching staff and the fourth in Nolasco's career.
"I could attack these guys. They couldn't go up there swinging because they needed base runners," Nolasco said of the strategy that proved so effective against a lineup that came into the game leading the majors in runs scored, slugging percentage and RBI.
"To face that gauntlet for four times around the batting order, you have to tip your hat. He was outstanding," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez.
The big hit in the first inning was a three-run home run by catcher Ronny Paulino, his first of the season."
