Returning punts not Reggie Bush's duty with Dolphins

"Reggie Bush has returned four punts for touchdowns in his NFL career, but he isn't even listed among the three punt returners on the Dolphins' initial depth chart.

And on Wednesday, coach Tony Sparano didn't sound eager for Bush to shoulder most of that responsibility.

"He may do it at some point down the road, but right now it's not something we're concentrating on," Sparano said. "It may be situational down the road."

Bush is listed first on the depth chart at running back — though Daniel Thomas is competing with him for the starting role — and the Dolphins likely don't want to overburden Bush.

Receiver Davone Bess, who is listed first on the depth chart for punt and kickoff returns, actually has been more productive than Bush as a returner the past two seasons.

Bess averaged 7.5 and 11.4 yards on punt returns in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Bush averaged 4.8 on 27 punt returns in '09 (second-worst among qualifiers) and 6.6 on 14 returns last season, though he did return a punt for an 83-yard touchdown in an NFC divisional playoff game in January 2010.

Bush's best work as a punt returner came in 2008, when he scored three touchdowns and averaged 13.5yards, second-best in the league. He also scored on a punt return in his rookie season in 2006."
