Less than a week after the search for a pitching coach got complicated by an onrush of established candidates available and new teams in need of a hire, the Cardinals have landed the next coach they intend to lead their pitching staff.

Former Washington Nationals coach Mike Maddux will be hired as the Cardinals' next pitching coach, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report, doing so on Twitter. The Post-Dispatch has confirmed the move, and a formal announcement from the team is expected as early as Thursday.

Internal candidate Bryan Eversgerd, who was pitching coach with Class AAA Memphis this past season, remains a leading candidate for the open bullpen coach position.
