Replacing Westbrook key for Eagles' run game

"Every week until training camp, another position on the Eagles is being analyzed. This week it's the running backs.

When the Eagles decided that one of their best running backs of all time, Brian Westbrook, was finished, there wasn't much debate.

And the fact that Westbrook, who will turn 31 just before the start of this season, has not signed with another team validates the Eagles' decision for the most part.

Now the question isn't about Westbrook, who led the team in total yards for six straight years, it's about his replacement.

"We feel LeSean (McCoy) is ready to step in and do the job,'' Eagles head coach Andy Reid said this spring about his new featured back.

McCoy, the team's second-round pick out of Pitt in the 2009 draft, began his career as if he was more than ready.

In his first NFL game, he got nine carries and turned them into 46 yards for a 5.1 average yards per carry in a win over Carolina. In his first extended playing time, with Westbrook out of action with an ankle injury, he carried 20 times for 84 yards and scored a touchdown in a win over Kansas City."
