Pepe Reina's Liverpool future looks increasingly uncertain after new signing Simon Mignolet insisted he had moved to Anfield to be first-choice keeper.

The £9million buy from Sunderland refused to be drawn on whether he had received any assurances from manager Brendan Rodgers, but he pointedly added: 'I'm not here to sit on the bench.'

Reina is still expected to end up at Barcelona, with Victor Valdes weighing up lucrative offers from France and America, and Belgium keeper Mignolet appeared to confirm he had been signed as a replacement, rather than understudy.

'I had a very positive meeting with Brendan Rodgers before signing for Liverpool,' he said. 'I can't say what we discussed, and whether there were any assurances about starting games. That's between us, but it's fair to say the purpose of this move is not so I can look on from the sidelines.
