"For all the nice words the Giants had to say about Rhett Bomar, there was no way they were going to go into the season with him as the only backup insurance for Eli Manning. And for all the kick return candidates they have on the roster, there was no one who really brought much to the table. So, last night general manager Jerry Reese acquired quarterback Sage Rosenfels and kick returner Darius Reynaud from the Vikings.
The Giants gave up two draft picks: A fifth-round pick in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012. This move could fill two needs without costing very much.
Rosenfels, 32, did not really have a spot with the Vikings. Once Brett Favre decided to unretire again, he was stuck playing behind Favre and Tavaris Jackson. The Giants' need for a No. 2 quarterback arose when Jim Sorgi's ailing shoulder landed him on season-ending injured reserve. The market for a backup was not exactly brimming with talent and with the season opener nine days away, the Giants obviously felt they needed to make a move.
Bomar fired the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:49 remaining as the Giants ended the preseason with a 20-17 victory over the Patriots on Thursday night."
