"Infielder Chris Valaika hobbled around on crutches in the Reds' clubhouse Monday, victim of a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his right knee.

Valaika hurt the knee while hitting a single Sunday game at Colorado. The initial diagnosis was a strained knee, but further evaluation Monday revealed the tear.

Valaika will have surgery sometime next week, and he expects to return for spring training 2012.

Valaika said the injury happened when he was batting in the fifth inning Sunday. Valaika singled up the middle but paid a heavy price.
