Reds seeking top-of-rotation starter

"The Reds still seek a frontline starting pitcher, and general manager Walt Jocketty said today that the team has targeted a half-dozen such candidates.

Jocketty made his remarks on the second and final day of Redsfest, during a Q-and-A format with fans that also included manager Dusty Baker. A large crowd watched the session, which was held on the main stage at Duke Energy Convention Center downtown.

"There are six pitchers that we've targeted that we feel are top-of-the-rotation guys, potentially," Jocketty said. "They might be threes now, and could be twos. We've talked to all the clubs and exchanged things with some, not to the point we're close to anything."

Jocketty, per his custom, did not name any of the six pitchers.

ACE CUETO: Baker, in a separate interview this weekend, was asked who would be the Opening Day starting pitcher if he had to select one today.

"At this point it would be Johnny Cueto," Baker said. "He's earned it. Johnny Cueto has got some of the best stuff in this league. It's taken him two or three years to get to this point, and that's what happens."

Cueto this past year became the Reds' ace, with a 9-5 record and 2.31 ERA. He has lowered his ERA each season since joining the Reds in 2008."
